Becoming-Aqueous by Esther Touber
Devonport Regional Gallery

Becoming-Aqueous is a photographic project that responds to the rising of sea levels and the various consequential threats of such. While the effects of climate change are becoming more understood on land, the marine world suffers from ignorance and neglect due to its “unseen” nature. To counter this lack of awareness, I create wearable artefacts from natural materials collected from the coastlines of Southern lutruwita/Tasmania. The marine world takes centre stage in this project, allowing the aqueous to be seen and felt. I refer to these artefacts as trappings. These devices are designed to be placed on humans in unconventional ways, in an intentional act that challenges and disrupts the human body.
