The grass is greener where you water it is an exhibition of paintings and drawings that invite feelings of nostalgia for a childhood nourished on the North West Coast of Tasmania; and more specifically, Devonport.

These works portray scenes from faraway birthdays, beach days, evenings in the backyard, familiar parks and show days, to name a few. These scenes are stripped of the figures that once inhabited them, bearing the question of who they were, and where they went.

As a Tasmanian born in Japan, with many family members who are Devonport born-and-bred locals, Corinna found that she only learned to appreciate the city, its people and the landscape after she’d left it. Humbled by the embarrassment she felt for a childhood taken for granted, this exhibition is her gesture to her home. The grass is always greener wherever you water it.

This is Corinna Howell’s second solo exhibition of her emerging artistic career. Her primary medium and practice is in painting and drawing, and she describes herself as a contemporary Genre artist. The artist now lives and works in Hobart with her family of 3, and visits home to Devonport every few months of the year.
