Create & Make Online
Devonport Regional Gallery
Create & Make Online is a series of creative activities developed by Devonport Regional Gallery, designed to inspire children and families to explore art-making from home. Each project encourages experimentation, imagination and hands-on making using accessible materials you can find around the house.
The program introduces different artistic ideas and approaches, from storytelling and mapping to abstract sculpture and experimental painting. There is no right or wrong way to create, just an opportunity to play, explore and enjoy the process.
Map Making
Inspired by Cathy Jenner
This activity is inspired by North West Tasmanian artist Cathy Jenner, whose practice explores drawing, soft sculpture, mapping and storytelling. Her work is known for its vibrant colours, rich textures and playful narratives.
In this project, participants are invited to create their own imaginative map based on a favourite book, film or TV show. Using drawing and collage techniques, you can design a place filled with roads, rivers, buildings or magical spaces, and even include characters and objects cut from magazines.
The focus is on storytelling and personal expression—thinking about where the story takes place, what happens there, and how you might place yourself within that world.

Experimental Paper & Wire Sculpture
This workshop explores sculpture through experimentation with paper, wire and everyday materials. It encourages participants to think beyond traditional art-making and instead focus on colour, shape, line and movement.
Participants begin by creating expressive drawings using a variety of techniques, including continuous line drawing and free mark-making. These drawings are then cut into shapes and transformed into three-dimensional sculptures using wire and cardboard bases.
The outcome is an abstract artwork where there are no mistakes, just exploration and creative discovery.

Painting with Odd Materials
This project invites participants to experiment with unconventional materials to create unique paintings. Inspired by artists who use unexpected mediums, it encourages creative thinking about what can be used to make marks and textures.
Instead of traditional paint alone, materials such as coffee, turmeric, food colouring and everyday household items can be used alongside tools like toothbrushes, sponges and leaves. Layers are built up through splashing, pressing and texturing techniques.
The result is a vibrant, layered artwork that celebrates curiosity, experimentation and the joy of making something unexpected.
