In the Oxford English dictionary dusk is defined as the darkest part of twilight this brief moment in time for me emanates a sensation not dissimilar to Mike Kelley’s description of Sigmund Freud’s concept of the uncanny, although without its elements of terror, dusk ‘leads us back to something long known and once very familiar, yet now concealed and kept out of sight. It is the unfamiliar familiar, the conventional made suspect’ from which the veil of our modern existence is lifted, revealing however briefly, the fetishistic reality of the divine, the wondrous and the profane, and the possibilities these totemic entities can have in shaping our understanding of our contemporary experience. The five participating artists have been invited to explore these fetishistic wonders and possibilities, which emanate from this brief moment in time, in the medium of their choice.
