Expression of Interest: Projection Artwork Installation
Illuminate the North West 2026 – Devonport
Devonport City Council, in partnership with RANT Arts and regional tourism organisation West x North West, is seeking Expressions of Interest from experienced projection artists or designers to deliver a new public artwork installation in Devonport as part of Illuminate the North West 2026.
Illuminate the North West is a winter initiative presenting large‑scale projection artworks across six to seven locations throughout the North West Coast and King Island. Designed to enhance the winter visitor experience, the project combines digital projection, sound and storytelling to activate public spaces and encourage regional visitation during the off‑season.
About the Devonport commission
This commission will see the selected artist collaborate with Devonport City Council, RANT Arts and West x North West to create a site‑specific projection artwork for presentation in Devonport in July 2026. The work will form part of the broader Illuminate the North West program and is intended to complement other regional installations presented across the North West.
The projection artwork may include sound, though sound is not mandatory. Council is seeking work that demonstrates strong creative vision, technical capability and relevance to place, with opportunities to engage both local audiences and visitors to the region.
Presentation details
The Devonport installation will be presented after dark across three consecutive evenings from 23–25 July 2026, coinciding with the Devonport Jazz Festival. The projection artwork will run for 9–15 minutes, with multiple presentations per night.
A range of potential sites across Devonport have been identified for consideration, including civic, cultural and public locations. Artists are also welcome to propose alternative sites, with a preference for accessible Council‑owned locations.
Who should apply
This opportunity is open to artists and designers who demonstrate experience or emerging capability in projection and digital public artworks, and who have a strong connection to Tasmania.
How to apply
Artists are invited to submit an Expression of Interest via SmartyGrants. The EOI outlines the required submission materials and assessment criteria. Specific concept designs are not required at this stage.
EOI closing date: 5.00pm (AEST), Friday 6 March 2026.
