Infinite Realms (Part Two) by Emily-Rose Wills

Devonport Regional Gallery

This exhibition is part of the Little Gallery Emerging Artist Program 2025

This body of work is an evolving series that investigates remembered landscapes through abstract and intuitive mark-making, aiming to evoke the essence of memory. Initially focused on capturing fleeting recollections through spontaneous gestures, the series has expanded to explore the notion of infinite universes within a single atom, and the interconnectedness of all things.

My approach is rooted in mark-making as a meditative and instinctual process, evoking fragmented landscapes that shift between memory and present experience, between internal and external realms. In doing so, the work explores the idea that place is never static; it is layered, ephemeral, and constantly in flux.

As Anselm Kiefer states, “We are minuscule compared to everything that is out there,” a perspective that invites contemplation of humanity’s smallness in the vast expanse of existence. His process, intuitive yet layered with recurring motifs, informs Infinite Realms, where imagined worlds emerge through the interplay of memory and intuition. Similarly, John Wolseley’s sentiment, “I try to depict the world as an interconnected whole—not just what is seen, but the hidden forces that underpin everything,” situates the work in a dialogue between the visible and the unseen.

Fred Williams observed, “The source of all my paintings is in something that I’ve seen … The impetus always comes from some notation I’ve made outside,” highlighting the relationship between external stimuli and internal imagination. Each work in Infinite Realms serves as a portal to speculative topographies where memory transforms into tangible expression, inviting the viewer into contemplative microcosmic realms.
