This panel talk brings together artists from Tasmania/Lutruwita who connect with the theme of tidal in their own ways. The panel includes Artist in Residence Cheryl Rose, Sisters Akousmatica Julia Drouhin and Phillipa Stafford and Dr Simon Spain, and is chaired by Dr Tim Butcher.

The chair: Dr Tim Butcher
Following a 20-year academic career across leading universities in Australia and the UK, collaborating with communities and organisations ranging from the people of Papunya to Counterpoint Arts, Tim founded ConnectCurateCreate, a Tasmanian for-purpose media company, to produce solutions to the problems he identifies in his most recent book, ‘Creative Work Beyond Precarity: Learning to Work Together,’ published by Routledge in 2023.
He is currently writing his next book, while pursuing his mission to share the unique stories of Tasmanian emerging artists through ConnectCurateCreate, to inspire fresh ideas, and build a community driven by creative exploration.

The panel
Cheryl Rose makes multi-media work deeply connected to her culture and country. Cheryl recently took part in MY COUNTRY: The Country Road + NGV First Nations Commissions, mentored by Denise Robinson, and is our tidal.24 festival Artist In Residence.

Dr Simon Spain is a visual and socially engaged artist, bringing over 30 years of experience in arts programming for children and young people internationally. Currently, he co-directs all that we are, is Chair of Regional Arts Australia, and serves on Tasmania’s B4 Early Years Coalition.

Birgitta Magnusson-Reid, Devonport Regional Gallery Visual Art Coordinator, has extensive experience in museums and galleries, broad knowledge in exhibition administration and design. She has worked and trained in Sweden and Australia. Birgitta has been involved with the tidal exhibition since 2018.
