The Islands Where We Left Our Ancestors
Joshua Santospirito in conjunction with violinist Natalya Bing presents this audiovisual storytelling performance created from Josh’s new graphic novel The Islands Where We Left Our Ancestors.
With live storytelling and music combined with art from the book, you will find this entertaining story comes off the pages and into the Devonport Regional Gallery in a way that you’ve never seen before.
The story: Joshua and his father hope to locate the burial place of Joshua’s great-great-grandfather on the Italian island of Salina. As Joshua explores the history of the Aeolian islands, he is visited by mythological figures, gods and stories. But it’s not always so easy to find the past you’re looking for, nor to travel with your parents.
The Islands Where We Left Our Ancestors is available now nationwide in bookstores. You can also pick up a copy of the book on the night.
This tour was supported by the Tasmanian Government through Arts Tasmania.
This event is held on the lands of the Palawa and Pakana people. We pay our respects to their elders past and present and honour their ongoing storytelling traditions. It always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
Joshua Santospirito is a multimedia artist, storyteller and an award-winning graphic novelist. He lives in a veggie patch in Nipaluna/Hobart.
