Finalists for Tasmanian Art Award tidal.22 announced
The biennial tidal.22: City of Devonport National Art Award has attracted 141 high-quality entries for its 10th installment since the competition started in 2004.
Convention and Arts Centre Director Geoff Dobson said the $20,000 major acquisitive award, sponsored by Devonport City Council and the Devonport Regional Gallery Friends Committee, is open to artists who reside or have a strong connection with Tasmania. Mr Dobson said the People’s Choice Award will be announced at the close of the exhibition and the artist will receive $1,000, courtesy of One Agency Collins Real Estate.
A total of 49 works by 46 artists were pre-selected for the finalists’ exhibition, chosen by judges Raymond Arnold, Artist, Ashley Bird, Senior Curator Visual Art and Design, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and Michelle Boyde, Artistic Director, Design Tasmania.
“Tidal aims to encourage contemporary practice with strength of concept, innovation, and execution of two-and three-dimensional artwork,” Mr Dobson said.
“The theme is open to a range of interpretation regarding tides and living by the water, be it personal, environmental, political or of cultural nature.”
Mr Dobson said the preselection was very competitive and he congratulated the following artists:
Joshua Andree, Craig Ashton, Liam Ross Baker, Alexander Beech, Lorraine Biggs, Nikala Bourke, Elizabeth Braid, Lucinda Bresnehan, Dave, Carswell, Dane Chisholm, Joel Crosswell, Sevé De Angelis, Richard Dunlop, Helen Edwards, Gabrielle Falconer, Lisa Garland, Jane Giblin, Elaine Green, Zoe Grey, Patrick Grieve, Neil Haddon, Belinda Hall, Robyn Harman, Rosie Hastie, Kit Hiller, Georgia Ingall, Loralee Jade, Sally James, George Kennedy, Amber Koroluk-Stephenson, Colin Langridge, Jan Larcombe, Sara Maher, Penny Mason, Nataša Milenović, Chris Morgan, Anne Morrison, Sarah Rhodes, Trish Richers, Troy Ruffels, Hope Smith, Melissa Smith, David Stephenson, Julie Todd, Evelyn Vyhnal And Alex Wanders.
The winning artist will be announced at the tidal.22: City of Devonport National Art Award finalist’s exhibition opening at the Devonport Regional Gallery on Friday, 9 December.
The exhibition will be on display until Saturday, 28 January 2023.

THE AWARD
tidal.22: City of Devonport Tasmanian Art Award is a biennial, acquisitive award exhibited at the Devonport Regional Gallery. Artists are invited to submit 2 or 3-dimensional artworks that reflect on the theme of tidal – the natural, cultural, personal, or political concerns related to the sea and coastal regions.
To enter, Artists must identify as Tasmanian by either birth, or by having demonstrated a strong and ongoing association with Tasmania for no less than two years, or the artist can adequately demonstrate a strong connection to Tasmania, which should be evident in the work entered in the Award.
THE AWARD AIMS TO:
- Encourage experimentation within and across media
- Present a stimulating and diverse exhibition of contemporary Tasmanian art practice for the Devonport Community and visitors to the region
- Promote excellence in contemporary visual art that reflects on natural, cultural, personal or political concerns related to the sea, coastal regions and coastal communities
The $20,000 Major Acquisitive Award is sponsored by the Devonport City Council and the Friends of the Devonport Regional Gallery. The Award will be presented at the opening of the exhibition.
$1,000 non-acquisitive People’s Choice Award is sponsored by One Agency Collins Real Estate. The Award is selected by the viewers of tidal. The Award will be announced at the conclusion of the exhibition.
SELECTION AND JUDGING
This is a selected Award.
Judges
The judging panel consists of three Tasmanian recognised art experts, who will select the finalist’s works and will then determine the winner of the Major Award.

GENERAL CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
- Entrants must submit work in accordance with the conditions set out in this application form. If these conditions are not met the application will not be considered.
- Entrants must be identified as a Tasmanian by either birth, or have been a residents of Tasmania for no less than 2 years prior to October 2022, or the artist needs to adequately demonstrate a strong connection to Tasmania, which should be evident in the work entered in the Award.
- Submitted work must have been completed in the 12 months prior to December 2022.
- Entries representing partnerships between individuals will be accepted on the understanding that each partner’s contribution is deemed equal.
- Devonport City Council employees and members of their families are ineligible to enter the Award.
