WORKSHOP Tricks of the Trade – Playing in a trio setting

Having relocated to Australia after seven years in NYC/Boston, Korean-Australian pianist and composer Mina Yu has established herself as a leading performer and educator. Her playing is influenced by classical composers Erik Satie, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Maurice Ravel as well as contemporary pianists such as Herbie Hancock and Eliane Elias.

Since being based in Australia, Mina has performed at Hamer Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre, Arts Centre Melbourne, the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, NGV, the Australian Open, Parliament House, and St Paul’s Cathedral. Mina was the finalist for the APRA PD awards in 2026, nominated for the Australian Music Prize in 2025 and currently teaches at the University of Melbourne and Monash College, while working as an AMEB assessor. Her qualifications include a Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music and a Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music. While at Manhattan School of Music, she was the recipient of many awards, including the CJ Culture Scholarship and the MSM Scholarship.

Long-time music accomplices Seddon and Schuster first met doing session work in London in the mid 2000’s. They have performed as a rhythm section since, recording with an array of artists and performing in various jazz projects for the best part of 20 years.

Daniel Seddon holds a Bachelor Degree in Contemporary music from Thames Valley University (London). Philippe Schuster holds a Bachelor Degree in Contemporary Music from West London University (London) and has taught at Drumtech (London), BIMM institute (London) and at the Australian Institute of Music (Melbourne).

Mina Yu with Daniel Seddon on bass and Philippe Schuster on drums are teaming up for the very first time at Devonport Jazz festival.

They will share and demonstrate their approach to performing in a trio setting.
