Create & Make
Create & Make is our after‑school creative program for children and young people aged 5–14. Designed to inspire curiosity and confidence, the program encourages participants to explore materials, ideas and artistic processes through hands‑on making in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Delivered over several weeks each term, Create & Make introduces young artists to contemporary art and artists, while giving them the freedom to experiment, play and develop their own creative ideas. Sessions focus on process rather than finished outcomes, allowing children to learn through trial, discovery and imagination.
Creative exploration in 2025
Throughout last year, children taking part in Create & Make experimented with a wide range of materials and techniques, including drawing, collage, construction and mixed media. Participants were encouraged to think creatively, take risks and explore different ways of working, building confidence in their ideas and abilities across the program.
Term 1 highlights
In Term 1 this year, Create & Make ran as a six‑week after‑school program, with weekly sessions held from 4.00–5.00pm. Over the term, participants explored the work of three Australian artists, including a Tasmanian‑based practitioner, using their practices as inspiration for making their own artworks.
Young artists looked closely at:
- Rosie Deacon, whose bold and colourful work is created using easily accessible, everyday materials
- Sally Smart, known for her large‑scale collages and assemblage installations using fabric, metal and paint
- Edith Perrenot, a Hobart/nipaluna‑based artist, designer and maker who creates immersive and imaginative “universes” through her expansive practice
Across the term, children explored what inspires artists, how different materials can be used, and how ideas can be transformed into artworks. Inspired by each artist, participants created their own works through guided activities and open‑ended making.
