Finalists of tidal.24 Tasmanian Art Award announced

The finalists of the biennial tidal.24: City of Devonport Tasmanian Art Award have been announced.

The $20,000 major acquisitive award, sponsored by Devonport City Council and the Devonport Regional Gallery Friends Committee, is open to artists who reside in or have a strong connection with Tasmania.

The inaugural tidal competition was held in 2004 the award has since then evolved from being a national award for two-dimensional art forms to its current format where Tasmanian artists are invited to enter both two-and three-dimensional works.

The gallery received 146 entries to this the 11th instalment of the award. Visual Arts Coordinator, Devonport Regional Gallery Birgitta Magnusson-Reid said the entries were of a high calibre. 

“The entries to tidal.24 were very impressive, and this high standard is reflected in the large number of works that has been included in the finalists’ exhibition.”

The preselection was completed by Marnie Karmelita, Artistic Director, Ten Days on the Island, Dr. Julie Gough, Curator, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and Dr Malcom Bywaters, Director, Academy Gallery, University of Tasmania who selected 57 works by 56 artists.

The Devonport Regional Gallery extends their congratulations to the following artist on their inclusion in tidal.24:

Tidal encourages contemporary practice with strength of concept, innovation, and execution of two-and three-dimensional artwork,” Ms Magnusson-Reid added.

“The theme is open to a range of interpretation regarding tides and living by the water, be it personal, environmental, political or of cultural nature.”

The winning artist will be announced at the opening of tidal.24: City of Devonport Tasmanian Art Award at the Devonport Regional Gallery on Friday, 6 December 2024. The exhibition will be on display until Saturday, 8 February 2025.

In addition to main award, the Peoples’ Choice Award will also be announced at the close of the exhibition and the winning artist will receive $1,500, courtesy of One Agency Collins Real Estate.

This year tidal.24: City of Devonport Tasmanian Art Award coincides with the tidal.24 festival. The tidal.24 festival runs from 6 December 2024 to 8 February 2025, in and around the Devonport area, and includes an Artist in Residence, art exhibitions and experiences, live music, artist talks and creative workshops for all ages.
