Devonport Jazz Pure Jazz Sessions
Presents
RAN Band Melbourne Jazz Ensemble
The Royal Australian Navy Jazz Ensemble will be presenting a concert of original compositions and arrangements for the “Pure Jazz Sessions” series as part of the 2022 Devonport Jazz Festival. The ensemble has a number of members who have pursued a passion for composition and this concert will be an opportunity to present some original Australian music and showcase some of the compositional talent of the band.
The members of the ensemble have all studied music at some of Australia’s finest tertiary institutions, including the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, The Victorian College of the Arts, Monash and Melbourne University and the University of Tasmania. Members of the ensemble have also individually performed and studied overseas with world renowned musicians including scholarships to the Banff Centre for Creative Arts.
The ensemble’s line-up features the rhythm section of Julian Foord-Piano, Hadyn Murtagh-Double Bass, Bruce McIntyre-Drums, the horn section of Martin Duck-Trumpet, Gregory Smith-Alto Sax and Dan McIlvride-Trombone, and is fronted by our wonderful vocalist Maggie James.
Part of the program for this concert will be themed around “songs of ships and the sea”, an exploration of Jazz standards and originals associated with sea travel, including some beautiful ballads, some hard swinging Post-Bop instrumentals, and some contemporary improvised explorations. We hope you enjoy the voyage.
