Hobart’s Michaye Boulter explores time and presence through landscape

The upcoming solo exhibition Atmospheres by distinguished artist Michaye Boulter presents a contemporary exploration of Tasmanian landscapes, highlighting their timeless and universal qualities. The opening is set for Saturday, April 27, at 11 am at the Devonport Regional Gallery. Ashley Bird, Senior Curator of Visual Art and Design at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, will formally open the exhibition.

The Atmospheres exhibition forms part of Devonport Regional Gallery’s Solo Commission program, initiated in 2005, to offer Tasmanian artists the chance to create a new body of work for a solo exhibition.

The commission for 2024 was awarded to Michaye Boulter, a renowned Tasmanian artist who has regularly exhibited paintings in Australia since the early 1990s.

Atmospheres is an exhibition of paintings of fictitious Tasmanian landscapes which Michaye constructs through collaging and photographs that she has drawn on, ripped up and combined to create sources for her paintings,” said Convention and Arts Centre Manager Geoff Dobson.

“Michaye’s collection depicts places where she has spent time. For her, these works contain both memories and reveries, but through her process she discovers something else – a portal into an imagined realm.”

Michaye said the aim of her paintings is to conjure up and clarify the elusive emotions of her experience, dissolving the sense that we are separable from our surroundings.

“I see my paintings as portals into an imagined realm. Recomposing familiar landscapes into descriptions of the slow transition of time, one moment to the next, overlapping and turning back on itself,” Michaye said.
